Once you pass the theory test at your driving school and receive your appointment, you'll need to take the official exam at a government like building (or related with it... because the driving school is not authorized to do the exam). Here's everything you need to know about the process, based on my experience.

What You'll Receive from Your Driving School

After passing the school's practice test, you'll get:

  • A Ваучер (voucher) - keep this safe!
  • Appointment date and time
  • Instructions for the exam location from your driving instructor

What to Bring

  • Your Лична Карта (Bulgarian ID)

About the Area & What to Expect

The Area:
The exam building is in an industrial area that looks pretty rough - old buildings, run-down streets, and generally not the nicest part of town. Don't let this throw you off on exam day, but be prepared for what you'll see.

Street Reality:
In this area, you’ll encounter people in difficult circumstances, including many Romani individuals. Saw a dude laid out behind a car, deadass thought he was dead at first. You'll see folks on the block looking hungry as hell, stomachs louder than the traffic.

Dealing with the locals:
When I first came to scout the location, someone immediately approached talking my ear off in rapid Bulgarian - something about having no water, needing help, wants 5 leva to show me the building I already knew how to find. Against my better judgment, I decided to pay for the 'experience.' Big mistake. Gave the bum 5 leva and he still acted like I owed him rent. After a discussion in Bulgarian and calling him a scammer, he proceeded to go to the place. He barely showed me the building entrance and didn't even bother showing me the actual exam room. Total waste of money that probably went toward drugs, not water.

What I Learned:
Just say "не, благодаря" or "махай се" and keep walking. Don't negotiate, don't explain, don't feel bad about it. These 'helpful' offers are never worth it.

Don't worry - it's not over! Here's what I learned from the information posted at the exam center:

If you fail: You must personally submit documents at the "Automobiladministration" office (Room 10 in Burgas) to be allowed to retake

Costs for Retakes:
20 BGN (~10€) exam fee to the government
9 BGN (~4.50€) for a new voucher (paid separately via bank transfer)
• Cash or card payment at the location is not possible
